Ive had my iPad 2 for 2 yrs I’m on 5.1.1 just recently I’ve experienced the greyed out problem. I haven’t updated because of others updating and still having the greyed out problem.

      • Disappointed says

I am really disappointed with Ipad and Apple. The WiFi stopped working properly after less than one year (constantly turning off) but I was not that worried because I use the device mostly in my home country and I also have purchased a mobile connection. Now, however, I was planning to take the device aborad and would need the WiFi. First it seemed to be turning on but then was greyed out and has remained so even if I have tried everything advised on these support pages. The warranty went out some 8 months ago and according to Apple authorized service they would only change the device and charge the client 300+ euros for that. Thanks but no thanks.

Hi, try resetting the modem / Router, turn it off power for at least a minute, then power back.
          That’s what fixes mine.
          Have a blessing day!

I haven’t had the nerve to update the iphone to 6.1 since the apple store replaced my 4s back in Nov or thereabouts. but the wifi on 6.0 HAS worked since then after the upgrade. I still think it was the firmware update that did something at that time.

My iPhone has just given me the “greyed out wifi” problem too. I’ve turned my phone on and off twice, reset the network settings, and toggled the airplane mode on and off.
I don’t know what to do now, so if anybody could help me, that would be great.

Yesterday my wifi on/off greyed out. I’ve gone through all the fixes and nothing is working. I guess I’ll make a trip to the store and see what they have to say. Really frustrated since there are so many posts about the same thing over many months. Seems there should have been a fix by now.

Hi all, I’ve had the same problem with my iPhone 4S running IOS 6.1.2. BUT it is back online with a not greyed out WiFi :-))) history: _I was really frustrated because warranty was over and because of I have bought the iPhone in Orlando USA (I am living in Germany) I had no chance to get it changed in the Apple store. I know warranty is only for 12 months but Apple care told me via phone that I get a refurbished one in an US apple store. Ok, not really an option for me ! Then I tried everything which is posted here. Reset network settings, Backup as new iPhone, jailbreak, try to downgrade, fridge, hairdryer etc… The only thing which worked for me was the fridge :-) After 20 minutes with -16°C i was able to turn on WiFi. The Wifi switch was not greyed out anymore and wifi was connected to my router. Unfortuneately it only worked for 10 to 15 minutes and then wifi lost connection and the switch was again greyed out. __—My Solution— (wifi is working for nearly 2 days now without any interruption !!!! )_I forgot my iPhone on my desk at work. At the next morning I recognized that only 10% Power was left in the battery. Of course it last not the hole day and so when it reached 4% it switched off automatically. When I arrived at home a couple of hours later I´ve plugged it to the charger. When i looked at it again it has some 30% battery power and as a really big surprise I saw the wifi symbol which said connected to a network :-))))_ I couldn´t believe it but it was true !!!! My wifi was working again and it was connected to my home net. I ve tried a lot things since now ( switching to flight mode, switching the phone off etc.) but it is still working 100% and as I said fully stable .__So let your Iphone run fully out of power, maybe wait some extra time and then charge the phone and look what happens !__I really hope that this is not only a coincidence and that my post help you guys to manged this annoying problem !!! Give it a try it really solved my Problem (again: 2 days now and still working :-))__I would be happy to get your feedback !!!__Best regards _Michael_

I have a 4S and have had the same problems as reoprted everywhere; greyed out wifi, bluetooth & carrier. I have tried all the suggestions on the forums and today I thought I had come across the solution when I resorted to what I felt was the last resort – turning it off and putting in the freezer for 25 minutes. Hey presto it worked! Although the icons remain greyed out I could use the wifi. How pleased was I that after months of not working, it worked!

Sdaly though, this was short lived and after an hour and a half if reverted back to not being able to connect to wifi. So I’ve put it back in the freezer and taken it out again and again it is working. Probably not for long.

With the amount of complaints from frustrated iPhone users why, isn’t Apple acknowledging the fault? I’m in the position where I need to buy and new laptop – will I be choosing and Apple Mac? I have no confidence in Apple!

Wifi button disabled for me too. None of the fixes suggested here worked.

    I have iPhone 4S.
Really don’t want to deal with backup and restore. Not cool.

    Hello
I tried the hairdryer solution with my 4S. Firstly remove the back cover and battery. (See ifixit.com).Next direct the hairdryer hot air along the logic board and across the top of it. I heated this area for 2 mins keeping the hairdryer moving slowly all the time to avoid overheating. Let the phone cool, replaced the battery etc. Result !!

NB I removed the battery because these should not be heated up.

Just received a new Iphone 4S as replacement for a faulty one under warranty! This doesn’t connect to Wifi. Wifi option greyed out. Tried all options except freezer. what an unnecessary inconvenience!

    Painful

I’ve been having this problem with my iPhone 4S since the 6.0 upgrade. Apple’s been of no help because my warranty is up. I”m looking to getting an Android next.

  14. Tamara says

The freezer fix only worked a few times and now I’m just as frustrated as before. Why aren’t Apple taking full responsibility for this? Samsung SIII here I come……

  15. Max says

Intermittent WiFi connectivity problems for some time, and now the WiFi button is grayed out.

What kind of idiots put their iPhones/iPads/iPods in the freezer or use a hairdryer on them?

These are two of Apple’s many focops, it is as simple as that. I’m going Korean on their asses.

  16. Ellice says

Wtf!!! Wifi greyed out again on my iPhone 4S. No wifi AGAIN or Bluetooth. Soooo I tried the last thing on the list even if it sounded silly. What I saw online on an apple blog – Put it in the fridge for about 30 min. Omg…..it worked. But people say it won’t last long. What is going on apple?????? So frustrated!!

I just updated my iPod touch to iOS 6 and when i was done i typed in my wifi password and it told me that it was unable to connect. I am really getting mad with this!! I have tried many different things to fix it, but none of them have worked. has any one came up with a solution? this is getting on my nerves!

  18. Sam says

I had the same problem where my Iphone 4s WIFI was completely grey out. I had showed my colleague at work and he said I should TURN both AIRPLANE and DO NOT DISTURB ON, then turn my phone off for about 15MIN. I then turned my phone back ON after about 20min, turned OFF Airplane MODE and Do Not Disturb…VIOLA my WIFI and Bluetooth have been working ever since then. So I guess it’s a bug in iOS 6.1.3…..

Recap: GOTO Settings > AIRPLANE MODE ON, Do Not Disturb ON> Turn Off Phone > Leave for 15min-20min > Turn Phone Back On > Turn Off AIRPLANE MODE, Do Not Disturb > Turn WIFI ON. Cheers !!!

      Hi Sam,

had the same problem and have tried everything, also the freezer what has worked for 20 min., but your solution did it…I think! It still working after quite a while now! Thanks a lot!

  19. Tamara says

STILL no joy despite trying all the fixes listed – only the freezer one worked for half an hour. How on earth can Apple say there isn’t a problem? Would I buy Apple again – NO as I have no faith in them or their products.

I have Greyed Wifi Iphone 4 I got from Craigslist for $180 from stranger, took it home the phone is DEAD I charge it it was powered on but when I unplug its DEAD, I charged it overnight. the next morning it works (normal) no plug. So I set up as a new (WIFI everything works).
And for some reason Wifi Greyed, After some strange charging session (messed up battery gauge)the phone finally dead and when its fully recharcged the Wifi works (NOT Greyed)

3 months later my battery was completely dead after 22 hour Flight to Indonesia, and was unable to get (Greyed Wifi)again. THE FIX simply for some reason when I get back to US bought a couple battery from AMazon change the Battery It works until today, I suspect this time have something to do with battery connection / Back Case. “So everytime the Wifi Grayed on this phone discnect and reconnect the Back Case and works.” Boots.

    High Light:
This Iphone 4 I got from Craigslist has a Broken Battery Connector connecting to Motherboard (it came off and its gone, I have not instaled a new one. But I keep my battery intact to the connecting joints of the Battery connector under it, (by force). The phone works normal for now, Wifi and everything Works, I suspect he guy from Craighlist manage to replace the screen safely only broke the Battery Connector (permanent damage).

Just Additional info of what I’ve experienced, it looks to me between software glitched that has something to do with battery in my case.

Uhgg!!!! Have spent hours on this problem with the help of friends, family and internet.Have turned off and on;reset everything; Backed up and restored; Put in the freezer, to no avail. I am trying the: turn on the airplane mode , do not disturb and turn off for 25min, method. If this doesn’t work will try letting battery run down…and turning back on. Of interesting note my bluetooth was turned off as well, but was able to turn it back on. Otherwise ,what the heck??? And Apple can’t help us!!! I will be making a trip to the Apple Store…will be interesting to see what they have to say…will keep u posted.

OK an update.. wifi still not working. Called AT&T technical support (thinking might be from that end), they were very helpful. I told her what was already done with no success. She spent at least a half hour with me with no luck of fixing the issue. Was then transferred by AT&T rep to Apple rep, was told (by Apple Rep) to restore to factory settings and he took my phone number and e-mail address. He told me someone would return my call in 1/2 hour to see if this resolved the issue. Would you know I received an e-mail from them saying they could not reach me (I was sitting by the phone the entire time).. he had put a totally bogus phone number. I sent a response e-mail and made an appointment (OMG) by way of phone…They returned my call and reported they could help me for a fee (because my free phone support time was over). REALLY!!!!!!!! That was it..I made an appointment by the computer with the APPLE Store. I was told it had a faulty chip…OK…My phone had 82 more days of warranty and therefore I received a new phone…YEAH!!!! But I wonder what if my phone was out of warranty?? I expressed my concern about this happening again.. The apple rep at the store assured me that was very rare and he has not had any returned (that were replaced). Hmmmmm….ok then:> Time will tell. Finally WIFI..
