For years, bookmarks have been the place where you keep like-minded websites grouped together on your various devices. And while that’s helpful when you need to go to just one website, it’s a bit of a nuisance if you want to open multiple tabs at the same time.
A good example of this is for someone like me, who needs to do a lot of research, and might need to save a few browser tabs so I can come back and view them later on. This could be achieved with a read-it-later service like Instapaper or Pocket, but again, you can’t open all the tabs at the same time.

How To Use Tab Groups in Safari
With the release of iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, Apple has introduced Tab Groups for Safari. This is a (relatively) quick and easy way to group some tabs together, in order to access them later or whenever you need to. Here’s how you can get started with using Tab Groups in Safari on the iPhone or iPad.
- Open the Safari app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap the Open Tabs (two stacked squares) button in the bottom right corner.
- Tap or long-press the Tabs option in the middle of the bottom toolbar.
- Select one of the following options:
- New Empty Tab Group
- New Tab Group from X Tabs.Â
- Type the name that you want to use to identify the Tab Group.
- Tap Save in the dialog box.
If you are creating an Empty Tab Group, you are taken to a new instance with a blank slate. This provides the starting point for you to create a tab group from scratch with specific websites in mind. In the event that you created a tab group from a group of tabs that were already open, then there’s nothing else that you need to do.
No matter which option you pick, you can access these tabs again by following the steps above and tapping on the Tabs option in Safari’s bottom toolbar. Another huge benefit of using Tab Groups is the fact that they are synced with iCloud, so you can create a group on your iPhone and open the same group on your iPad or Mac, and it goes the other way too.
How To Delete Tab Groups
If you end up finding that you don’t need the created Tab Groups any longer, you can go through and delete them. The process is the same regardless of whether you’re using Safari on an iPhone or an iPad. These are the steps that you need to take in order to delete Tab Groups from Safari:
- Open the Safari app on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap the Open Tabs (two stacked squares) button in the bottom right corner.
- Tap or long-press the Tabs option in the middle of the bottom toolbar.
- In the top right corner of the Tab Groups pop-up, tap the Edit icon.
- Tap the ellipsis icon next to the group you want to get rid of.
- Tap the Delete button with the trash can from the context menu that pops up.
And as we mentioned before, whether you add a new tab to a group or delete a group entirely, the changes are synced via iCloud. This way, you’ll have access to your groups no matter what device you find yourself using, and don’t have to worry about manually deleting groups on multiple devices.
