For years, bookmarks have been the place where you keep like-minded websites grouped together on your various devices. And while that’s helpful when you need to go to just one website, it’s a bit of a nuisance if you want to open multiple tabs at the same time.

A good example of this is for someone like me, who needs to do a lot of research, and might need to save a few browser tabs so I can come back and view them later on. This could be achieved with a read-it-later service like Instapaper or Pocket, but again, you can’t open all the tabs at the same time.

Use Tab Groups in Safari on Mac
With the release of macOS Monterey (along with iOS 15 and iPadOS 15), Safari has gained the ability to create and use Tab Groups in Safari. This makes it easy to group a bunch of tabs together, whether these are tabs you use on a regular basis, or just need to save to come back to at a later time. But before you can start using Tab Groups, you’ll first need to create one on the Mac, and here’s how you can do so:
- Open the Safari app on your Mac.
- Click the Sidebar icon in the top left corner.
- By default, the icon is placed between the window management and page navigation buttons.
- In the top right corner of the Sidebar, click the two overlapping rectangles with “+” icon in the middle.
- Select from one of the following:
- New Empty Tab Group
- New Tab Group With X Tabs
- Once selected, enter the name of the Tab Group.
- Press the Enter key on your keyboard.
If you already have the tabs open that you want to put together, you can also create a tab group without clicking the overlapping rectangles icon. Simply open the Sidebar, right click on the line that says X Tabs, and select New Tab Group With X Tabs from the drop-down menu. Then, name the Tab Group and press enter on your keyboard.
How To Delete A Tab Group
Deleting a tab group in Safari on the Mac couldn’t be easier. Apple has made it an extremely simple process, so you can get rid of tab groups that no longer need. Here’s how you can delete a Tab Group in Safari on Mac:
- Open the Safari app.
- Click the Sidebar icon in the top left corner.
- Under Tab Groups, right-click on the group that you want to delete.
- Select Delete from the drop-down menu.
How to Show Tab Overview
If you have a lot of tabs grouped together, trying to find a specific one can be a bit frustrating. Normally, you would just have to scroll left and right until you actually found the tab you were looking for. But with Tab Groups, you can get an overview of your open tabs, making it easy to switch to the right one.
- Open the Safari app.
- Click the Sidebar icon in the top left corner.
- Under Tab Groups, right-click on the group that you want to delete.
- Select Show Tab Overview from the drop-down menu.
How To Move Tabs Between Groups
Occasionally, you might find yourself wanting to move a tab between groups. This is also possible with the latest version of Safari, and is another great way to try and keep everything organized.
- With the Safari app open and a few tabs loaded, right-click on the tab that you want to move.
- From the drop-down menu, hover your mouse cursor over Move to Tab Group.
- Select the group that you want to move the tab to.
- Alternatively, you can use this tab to create a new Tab Group from the drop-down menu.
Now the tab that you had associated with one group will be moved to another one!
