Starting with iOS 7, you can block calls and messages from unwanted contacts. One question we receive a lot from users is whether voice messages from a blocked contact are still accessible?
The short answer is NO. Voicemails from a blocked contact will not be accessible. A call from a blocked number will result in that call being forwarded to voicemail. This means that blocked number may still leave you a voice mail but you will not know they called or that there is a voice message. Note that a true call blocking can only be done at the carrier level.
If you have the numbers blocked in the carrier’s system, they are not able to leave a voice mail. The block in place will intercept that call and the caller hears a recording that the person they called has a block. The only way a person whose number is blocked would be able to leave a voice mail , is if they used a different phone to call. Callers are also able to manipulate the number that appears on an incoming call. This is called spoofing and can be done using a computer or a third party application.
Verizon Wireless offers a feature called Usage Controls that is $4.99 per line. It allows you to block restricted calls as well.
In the case of AT&T, the person calling will still be able to get to the voicemail. When you block a number, the device is blocking it from the phone so that it will not ring. The call is still being routed through the AT&T network, which is why the caller will eventually get to your voicemail.
AT&T offers an app called Smart Limits that for $4.99 per month that does have the capability to block calls completely. There are other apps that might be worth checking as well depending upon your situation. one of the most prominent app is “Mr. Number”.
Some users are able to handle this issue on their own with a little diy. The process is to set up your voice mail to use Google voice. Use the blocked feature on the phone to reject the call and send it to voicemail. You can then block the caller in Google voice. They will get one of the standard messages telling them the number has been disconnected or is no longer in service.
