Can You Add Different Keyboard Languages on Your Mac? (+ How to Do It)

Apple products, including Macs, are popular worldwide. And with this in mind, the Silicon Valley tech giant has had to think about how to optimize its tools for different markets. You can add multiple keyboards on an iPhone, but is it possible to do the same on a Mac?

Can You Add Different Keyboard Languages on Your Mac?

As is the case with your iPhone, you can add different keyboard languages on Mac devices. You might find this useful if you move to a different country and want to learn the language, but it might also be handy if you bought your device in another country and wish to change it to your mother tongue.

In addition to adding new languages, you can also choose the variation of a language you’d like to add. For example, in addition to UK English, you can choose from other forms of English – such as Canadian and US.

How to Add Different Keyboard Languages on Your Mac

Adding different keyboard languages to your Mac is pretty simple, and the steps below will guide you through the process.

1. Open System Settings and select Keyboard; you’ll find this near the bottom of the left-hand toolbar.

2. Go to Text Input > Input Sources. When you’re there, hit the Edit button.

3. At the bottom of the pop-up window, you’ll see + and – icons. Select +.

4. Choose the keyboard language you want to add. You can use the search bar to find it if that’s easier for you.

5. Once you’ve found the keyboard language you want to add to your Mac, highlight it by clicking on it. Then, click on the Add button.

6. After hitting Add, select Done.

To change your keyboard language, you can press the fn key until your Mac chooses it. And if you want to change it later, you can select your previous language.

Note that you can still type in a different language; changing the keyboard language simply adjusts the keyboard appropriately. For example, if you chose Danish, you could type symbols like æ and ø easier.

Adding Keyboard Languages on Your Mac Is Easy

As you can see, adding a new keyboard language on your Mac requires minimal effort. And once you’ve done it, you can easily switch between different languages. Changing your keyboard is handy if you need to type in something other than English, as foreign symbols are sometimes a little trickier to find with this keyboard.

You can still type in another English, however – even when you’ve switched your keyboard to another language. With this in mind, using keyboard languages on your Mac is perhaps a little easier than doing so on your iPhone. Think about which ones you’ll use more often and optimize your device accordingly.
