If FaceTime isn’t working for you, you are not alone!

Learn what to do when you just can’t get FaceTime to work.

  • Make sure Apple’s FaceTime Servers are up and running!
  • Check your internet connection and maybe change your DNS
  • Restart or force restart your device
  • Check your Date & Time Settings
  • For Macs, check your Firewall settings and ports
  • Make sure you sign in with your Apple ID or check that your Apple ID is correct
  • Toggle Airplane Mode on, connect to a WiFi network and try FaceTime again
  • For devices with cellular/mobile data service, go to Settings > Cellular and toggle on FaceTime to allow it to use your mobile data plan
  • Verify your email and phone number listed in FaceTime’s Settings
  • Toggle FaceTime off, wait 20-30 seconds, and toggle back on to refresh your connection to Apple’s FaceTime Servers

Not All Countries Support FaceTime

Unfortunately, FaceTime is not available in all countries (such as the United Arab Emirates). global apple services

Further, with FaceTime, you make video and audio calls ONLY with another iPhone (4th generation or later), iPad (2nd generation or later), iPod Touch (4th generation), or Mac using either a WiFi or Cellular Data connection.

Visit this Apple Site to learn what services and companies support FaceTime in your home country!

And of course, FaceTime only works with Apple products!

FaceTime is not compatible with Android phones, tablets, or Windows computers.

Does FaceTime get stuck at connecting? Can‘t call a legacy iOS device using Facetime? FaceTime stuck at connecting calls

Folks updating to iOS 13.4 discovered that their devices could no longer connect to older iOS devices running iOS 9.3.6 and earlier or Mac’s running OS X El Capitan or earlier. Some of our readers tell us this issue is also present when trying to call folks using iOS 10 versions as well. And others found this problem when using a Mac with macOS Catalina 10.15.4 to older iOS versions and OS X versions.

With this issue, Facetime gets stuck at ‘connecting‘ for both inbound and outbound calls.

To fix these issues, update to iOS and iPadOS 13.4.1 or above. For Macs running macOS Catalina, update your macOS to the latest macOS version (Apple released a supplemental update for macOS Catalina 10.15.4.)

Apple says the issue is now fixed in this version and higher.

Is FaceTime Showing Unavailable For A Specific Person?

If you see an unavailable notice when trying to call a specific person using FaceTime, it’s possible that the person isn’t taking calls at the moment. FaceTime unavailable iOS 12

There are a variety of reasons why a person shows up as unavailable in FaceTime

  • The phone is out of battery or switched off
  • Do Not Disturb is on
  • The person did not answer your call after 10 rings
  • Out of range or not connected to WiFi or Cellular Data
  • On another FaceTime call
  • The person you call does not have FaceTime enabled on their device

When you see FaceTime Unavailable, it usually indicates a problem at the receiving end of your call.

Try contacting the person using a different method (like texting via the Leave a Message icon within FaceTime, calling via the Phone App, or emailing) and let them know you are unable to FaceTime with them.

Why is My FaceTime Not Working On My iDevice or Mac?

There are a bunch of reasons why FaceTime doesn’t work on your iPhone, iPad, iPod, or Mac.

We’re outlining the top reasons why in this article AND give you the tools to fix FaceTime when it’s acting up.

1. Check Apple Servers

Sometimes even Apple goes down.

So it’s a good idea to check in with Apple’s System Status to see if there are any on-going service issues with FaceTime and associated services like iMessage and iCloud. Check Apple System Status Report and Website for Issues

2. Toggle WiFi On and Off Or Switch To Cellular Data

Refresh your internet connection by disabling and then re-enabling WiFi. Go to Settings > WiFi and toggle it off. Wait 30 seconds and toggle it back on.

Alternatively, if using a device with LTE Data, go to Settings > Cellular and toggle Cellular Data off and on. turn off cellular data on iPhone and iPad

3. Try an iMessage

Ask someone to send you an iMessage before you try to FaceTime.

This often helps Apple Servers, your router, and your iDevice to get things going!

4. Change Your DNS

  • For iDevices, tap Settings > WiFi > YOUR NETWORK’S NAME > Configure DNS > Manual > Add Server > enter 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 > Save
    • Make sure you delete your current DNS by tapping on the red minus sign and pressing Delete Make Safari faster, more secure with OpenDNS & Google Public DNS
  • For Macs, click  System Preferences > Network > Select YOUR NETWORK’S NAME > Advanced > DNS Tab > click the + button to add Google DNS, enter 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
    • Click OK then Apply Make Safari faster, more secure with OpenDNS & Google Public DNS
  • If you don’t like Google’s Public DNS, try OpenDNS or Cloudflare instead

5. Restart Your Device

A reboot often fixes these types of issues for Macs and iDevices. And if a restart doesn’t help, try a forced restart.

To restart a Mac

  • Go to the Apple Menu > Restart (or Shut Down and then power up again)

Screenshot of the Apple menu highlighting the Shut Down option
Shut down your Mac from the Apple menu

Restart an iDevice

  • For iDevices, press the power button until the slider appears, then slide to power off. Power up as normal
  • To restart an iPhone X Series and devices without a home button, follow these instructions
    • Press and hold either volume button AND the Power/Top/Side button until the slider appears
    • Drag the slider to turn it completely off
    • After your device turns off, press and hold the Power/Top/Side button again until you see the Apple logo how to restart an iPad with no home button
  • For folks using iOS 11 and above, there’s another method via your Settings Menu
    • Open Settings > General
    • Scroll down and tap on Shut Down iOS 11 Setting to Shut Down iPhone
    • Power up after a rest period of 20-30 seconds

How-To Perform a Forced Restart on iDevices

  • On an iPhone 6S or below plus all iPads with home buttons & iPod Touch 6th generation and below, press Home and Power at the same time until you see the Apple logo
  • For iPhone 7 or iPod 7th generation: Press and hold both the Side and Volume Down buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo
  • On an iPhone or iPad without a home or iPhone 8 and above: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Then press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Finally, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo Forced Restart Not Working on iPhone 8 or iPhone X?

6. Set Your iDevice’s and Mac’s Date & Time to Automatic

  1. For iDevices, it’s best to turn on Set Automatically in Settings > General > Date & Time App Store app crashing, fix
  2. For Macs, go to System Preferences > Date & Time > select Set date and time automatically Error Occurred During Activation for iMessage or FaceTime on Mac?

Many FaceTime problems are due to incorrect dates or times on your devices.

If Apple Servers find a mismatch between your device’s date or time and FaceTime’s server’s time for your current location, FaceTime, iMessage, and other Apple services won’t work, and the verification fails

7. Turn Off All Restrictions

If using any restrictions or parental controls on the device, turn these off temporarily, until you get FaceTime working again. Can't Delete Safari History on iPhone, Fix

To check if Restrictions are Enabled

  • Using iOS 11 and below, go to Settings > General > Restrictions
  • With iOS 12 and above, go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions Where are Restrictions in iOS 12? We Found It and More!
  • For Macs. go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Parental Controls

8. Using a Firewall on Your Mac?

Check that you enable the following ports for FaceTime when using a firewall.

Firewall Ports FaceTime

  • 80 (TCP)
  • 443 (TCP)
  • 3478 through 3497 (UDP)
  • 5223 (TCP)
  • 16384 through 16387 (UDP)
  • 16393 through 16402 (UDP)

FaceTime Not Working: Activating Problems

If you are unable to activate FaceTime, try the following:

  • Make sure that you have an internet connection via WiFi or Cellular Data
    • With a cellular data plan, you can use FaceTime without WiFi on an iPhone 4s or later and iPad (3rd generation or later)
  • If FaceTime doesn’t activate on WiFi, try cellular. Or vice-versa if it won’t activate on Cellular, try WiFi instead
  • Try to Reset All Settings. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
    • Removes WiFi passwords and any personalized iDevice settings iOS 10 Install and Activation Problems, how-To
  • Check for any Apple ID issues
    • Make sure that your Apple ID lists your iPhone’s phone number and NOT a landline number (if you have one)
      • Go to Settings > Apple ID Profile > Name, Phone Number, Email > Reachable At
      • Edit information if necessary so your iPhone and email is listed
      • Once updated, toggle FaceTime OFF and Back ON
    • Make sure that you have a valid Apple ID. You can create a new Apple ID or go to your Apple ID account to make changes by visiting and using the “Manage your Account” part
    • If you forgot your username or password, select the “Forgot Apple ID or password” link or visit Apple’s iForgot website
  • Tap Settings > FaceTime to see that Apple verified your email address. If your status is saying “verifying,” or stuck connecting (the spinning wheel); then try toggling FaceTime off and on (Settings > FaceTime OR FaceTime for Mac: FaceTime > Preferences)

FaceTime not working; how to troubleshoot FaceTime to fix your problems

Using iOS 11 and Above? Try Offloading!

For folks using iOS 11, Apple offers a new feature called offloading that’s similar to delete.

However, instead of removing the app and your data, offloading removes that app only but keeps all the apps documents and data.

To offload an app

  1. Go to Settings > General > Storage
  2. Wait for all the apps to show up in the list
  3. Scroll down the list of apps and locate FaceTime
  4. Tap FaceTime
  5. Choose Offload Offloading an app on iPhone or iPad
  6. Restart your iDevice
  7. To reinstall, go back to Settings > General > Storage > FaceTime
  8. Select Reinstall reinstall app on iOS 11 iPhone and iPad

FaceTime Camera Not Showing You?

A few of our readers tell us that their iPhones’ cameras stop working while on FaceTime calls. In most cases, users can see their friends, but their friends cannot see them. Instead, your camera shows a black screen. FaceTime: I can see him; he can’t see me

If you experience this problem while making FaceTime calls, close out all the suspended apps in the app switcher that have access to your camera by double pressing Home or swiping up the Home Gesture Bar and then swiping up on the App Previews of all apps that use the camera. Close FaceTime’s App Preview too!

Then relaunch FaceTime and see if your camera now shows your beautiful face to your callers!

Live Photos Not Working on FaceTime?

  • To work, everyone on the call must use macOS High Sierra or iOS 11 to capture a Live Photo in FaceTime
    • Live Photos was not included as a feature in iOS 12.0–update to a more recent iOS and Live Photos returns!
  • FaceTime Live Photos requires that you open your Photos app at least once before trying to take a FaceTime Live Photo
    • Live Photos needs the Photos app to have a default library to work
  • Check that all call members enable Live Photos on their devices.
    • Go to Settings > FaceTime > Toggle ON FaceTime Live Photos Live Photo Setting in FaceTime iOS 11
    • For Macs, open FaceTime and go to FaceTime > Preferences and tick the checkbox next to “Allow Live Photos to be captured during Video calls” Allow FaceTime App to Take Live Photos on Mac

When FaceTime’s Live Photo feature works, both you and the people you call receive a notification that a Live Photo was taken. Then, that Live Photo saves directly into your Photos library. Live Photo Notification in FaceTime

Group FaceTime Not Working?

If group FaceTime isn’ working, check out the tips in our article on troubleshooting FaceTime for iOS 12+ and iPadOS.

FaceTime Not Recognizing Your Phone Number?

  • Go to contacts change your phone number from HOME to Phone then turned off FaceTime and turn back on
  • Go to Settings > General Settings > Reset > Reset All Settings
    • No data is lost, but WiFi passwords and personal setting preferences are reset
  • Correct the area code on your Apple ID account
  • Check that you don’t have any outstanding debts with the App Store, iTunes, or any Apple product/services
  • Remove your SIM card, wait a few minutes, and replace it. Or, put someone else’s SIM card in and see if FaceTime recognizes the email and phone number
    • If another SIM works, you need a new SIM card.  Contact your carrier
  • Log out of all Apple services that require Apple ID and password
    • Force Restart (holding Power & Home or Volume Down until Apple Logo appears)
    • Log back into FaceTime with Apple ID
  • Log out of all Apple services that require Apple ID and password AND reset your network settings (you lose all WiFi passwords so write these down first)
    • To reset network go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
    • Force Restart
    • Log into your network
    • Log in to FaceTime

FaceTime Not Ringing When Somebody Calls?

If you see missed FaceTime calls, but did not hear a ring, check that “Push” is enabled in your Mail settings.

Go to Settings > Passwords & Accounts (for older iOS, check Accounts & Passwords or Mail) and make sure that Fetch New Data is set to Push.

If enabled, toggle it off, wait a few seconds, and then toggle it back on.Mysterious “No Subject, No Sender” Mail Messages

Apple’s servers need to have a recent internet address for the “location” of your iDevice to work!

Look at these other settings when FaceTime doesn’t ring

  • Check that your sound is up and that mute is not on via the side switch (if applicable)
  • Take a look and see if do not disturb (DND) is enabled via Settings > Do Not Disturb
    • If you want DND on, check that you allow calls from FaceTime
    • Go to Settings > Do Not Disturb > Phone > Allow Calls From > Everyone or All Contacts

No FaceTime Notifications?

Go to Settings > Notifications > FaceTime > Allow Notifications

Check out this article for more tips on troubleshooting missing alerts and notifications.

Missing FaceTime App?

  • Update to the latest version of iOS
  • Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions (for older iOS, go to Settings > General > Restrictions) and verify FaceTime and Camera are On. Disabling the camera disables FaceTime as well
  • And if you are still having problems, try restarting your device or performing a forced restart
    • For iPhones and iPads with no home button, iPhone 8, or iPhone 8 Plus: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and immediately release the Volume Down button. Then, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo
    • On an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold both the Side and Volume Down buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo
    • For an iPhone 6s and earlier, iPad with a home button, or iPod touch: Press and hold both the Home and the Top (or Side) buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo

Hi. I’m in an awkward position.

Due to covid-19, my mom (72) has been stuck in a hospital lockdown the past few months. She is not tech savvy.

Her FaceTime isn’t working (iPhone 5c). She can call out using her cellular and she can watch movies on amazon prime app but can’t make or FaceTime or FaceTime Audio calls. Nor can she receive cellular. I’ve even used what’s app video/ and audio and she can’t receive.

The hospital restriction doesn’t allow visitors so can cant see or even get my moms iphone.

I’ve had nurse do a reset of the iPhone… but they don’t seem to want to help.

My mom just hangs up on me in frustration when I ask her to do the stuff on her end and I don’t hear back from her until she calls back… sometimes days later.

    Help.

      Hi Carlton,

Oh, I am so sorry and hope your mother recovers soon. What a terrible predicament and sadly, you and your mother aren’t alone in these types of problems.

Have you updated your device to iOS 13.4.1? Apple just released this update to fix a FaceTime bug where users could not connect FaceTime calls with devices running older versions of iOS. Hopefully, this works for you and your mother since it involves you working on your device and not your mothers.

Another suggestion is to try FaceTime calling your mother using another Apple device–to rule out that the problem is not your device.

I know you mention that the nurses reset the device–did they perform network settings reset? This might help if it wasn’t already done. To do this, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

After resetting the network, any WiFi passcodes need to be re-entered.

If problems continue, please reach out again.

We wish you and your family better health and hope your Mother recovers and comes home soon.

      Liz

    Hi

My Mum can Video call me via FaceTime from her iPad to my MacBook Pro but I cannot video call her.

The audio button is green and the video is greyed out.

Even if I press the green audio button nothing happens.

Is this something that she needs to change on her iPad or I need to change on my MacBook?

We are connecting through her email address.

      Hi Leigh,

      A couple of thoughts:

      1) Make sure your Mum is added to your MacBook’s Contacts app and that the email you list for her is the same email attached to her Apple ID

      2) If you ever use external cameras or mics, make sure those are not connected to your MacBook. Then, check your FaceTime’s Video Menu from the top menu bar and ensure that those external cameras/mics aren’t selected

      3) Test your camera in another application to ensure it works–open Photo Booth and test your internal camera

      4) Quit FaceTime, open the Contacts app, and choose to FaceTime your Mum via the FaceTime video icon

Hope something here helps, if not let us know.

Then, close and reopen FaceTime app

      Close an app

      1. On an iPhone or an iPad with no home button from the Home screen, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause slightly in the middle of the screen

      Hi Rose,

Unfortunately, this appears to be a problem for quite a few folks! How frustrating indeed.

Let’s try a couple of things and see if we can improve the situation.

      1. Close all open apps by double pressing the home button or swiping up the home gesture bar and then swiping up all app previews off the top of your screen. Do this for all app previews until none remain–and all you see is your home screen

      2. Restart your device by powering off, waiting for 1 minute, and powering back on

      3. Open Settings app and reset your network settings. Make sure you know the WiFi passcode before doing this as you need to enter it in again. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings

      4. After resetting your network, go to Settings > WiFi and connect to your network entering the passcode

      5. Try FaceTime again

Also, please consider providing Apple your user feedback. Describe your problem with FT and let them know when this behavior started (for example, after updating to the latest iOS or so forth).

Another option to try, if available connect to a cellular data network instead of WiFi and see if FaceTime works. Some readers found this option worked for them.

I, too, am getting disconnected after 19 seconds.

I have check my IOS Via ITunes and there is nothing there or in software updates that need to be updated.

I was going to uninstall FaceTime then reinstall, but don’t know how….would that work?

      Hi Pixie,

Some folks have success with the following steps–make sure you do each step as listed, in the order as they are shown:

      1. Toggle off Facetime and then iMessage
      2. Restart your device
      3. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
      4. Restart again
      5. Toggle on Facetime and then iMessage
      6. Yup, one more restart

Now try FaceTime and see if it works.

If the problem happens with just one contact and not all contacts, try a restart on BOTH devices and then see if you can facetime with each other.

      Hi Mary,

Several other readers report similar problems. It seems the latest iOS update solved their problems–have you tried updating your iOS yet? If possible, update via iTunes using a Mac or Windows PC.

If not possible, update via Settings > General > Software Update.

Just make sure you backup your device before you update, no matter the method.

      HI Alanna,

Sorry to hear about FT not working on your device. Have you tried deleting the app and then reinstalling it and signing back in with your Apple ID?

Also, check to make sure nothing is blocking your camera–i.e. a case or something else.

If neither of these tips help, you could try to reset all your settings. This resets to default everything in Settings, including notifications, alerts, brightness, and clock settings like wake up alarms.
Resetting all settings also reverts all your personalized and customized features like wallpapers and accessibility settings back to factory defaults.
So you need to reconfigure these settings once your iPhone or iDevice restarts.

Before you take this action, backup your device via iTunes or iCloud.

To reset all settings, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.

      Hi Mark,

Have you tried closing the FaceTime app?

Double press the Home button, then locate the FaceTime App Preview, swipe up on it off the top of your screen to close the app. While you’re at it, close all open apps in the same manner.

Then restart your device by fully powering down, waiting 30 seconds, then turning it back on.

Launch the FaceTime app and see if the problem is gone.

My FaceTime on my laptop has been working, but yesterday it stopped working. I can make a call and it will ring but the call is not being received on the other end. When others try to call me it is not being received.
Just a side note, it has been working and is still working on my phone, so I am not sure why it is not working on my computer.
    Thanks for trying to help,

      Hi Elizabeth,

Try signing out of FaceTime by opening up the FaceTime app, going to Preferences, and under settings tap sign out. Once signed out, restart your Mac and then open the FaceTime app again and try signing in.

Hi. When I FaceTime someone, the screen where the video of them should be is black. I have made sure my Apple ID is verified, I have turned the ability to FaceTime on and off, I have turned my phone off and on, I have deleted FaceTime and then redownloaded it, I have tried hanging up and calling back, I have turned off Wifi and tried to just use my data, and still nothing is working. Sometimes the video works, but other times it will refuse to. Please help me fix this issue. Thanks.

      Hi Toriee,

So sorry to hear about your problems with FaceTime and your phone. Have you checked your restrictions? Also, make sure you update your iPhone’s iOS (Settings > General > Software Update). Many readers reported this bug in early versions of iOS 11–later versions appear to fix this issue.

Please backup your device via iCloud or iTunes before updating your iOS on your phone.

Another possibility is that a different app is highjacking your camera during FT calls. Try closing out all of your apps in the app switcher and then opening up FaceTime and making a video call.

To close all open apps, double press Home and swipe up off the top of the screen each and every app’s preview. Then restart your iPhone and open FaceTime and make a call.

      Hope this helps,

My FaceTime worked fine, then all of a sudden it won’t. I logged in via my ID and password. All good, BUT THEN it won’t verify. It just loops and loops or else says unknown problem during verification. I have tried all of the things that have been suggested on line but nothing seems to work. I even tried setting up another ID but get the same problem. What can I do to fix it. It is on a desktop MAC not an iPhone and I don’t use iCloud or iMessage.

      Hi Peter,

First, try launching FaceTime from the Applications folder (not the Dock) and see if it works from there.

If not, reset your Mac’s NVRAM. Shut down your Mac, then turn it on and immediately press and hold these four keys together: Option, Command, P, and R. Release the keys after 20-30 seconds, during which your Mac might appear to restart.

If FaceTime’s still not working, check your Mac’s Date & Time–turn off and on automatic date/time.

I faced a similar issue recently and spent way too much time trying to figure it out. Here’s what ultimately worked for me. First, backup your system before running this command.

      1. Open Keychain Access (spotlight search for it or find it in your Utilities folder)
      2. Choose category All Items
      3. In the search bar, type in IDS
      4. Select all items show and delete them
      5. Follow steps 3-4 and type in FaceTime and then iMessage
      6. Restart and try logging into FaceTime

If it doesn’t work, there’s one more file we can delete. We need to either use Terminal (Applications > Utilities) or drag a preference file to the trash

      1. Open Terminal
      2. type in this exactly: sudo rm /library/preferences/com.apple.apsd.plist
      3. press return
      4. close Terminal and restart the computer
      5. open FaceTime and try logging in again

If you’d rather drag the item to the trash. Navigate to your Hard Drive/Library/Preferences, locate the file com.apple.apsd.plist and drag that item to your Trash. Then restart and try logging into FaceTime again.

Hope one of these works for you. Keep us posted.

Oh, that’s a terrible problem. Try fully closing the FaceTime app on your iPhone by double pressing the Home button (or swiping up the Home Gesture Bar) and then tapping and swiping the FaceTime App preview off the top of your screen to close it. The call should end. After doing that, restart your iPhone normally and see if everything is back in business as usual.

      Hi Keith,

Sorry to hear about your problem getting FaceTime working on the iPad you purchased from Dubai. Unfortunately, at this time any device purchased originally in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, or Pakistan do not allow a user to download, install, and use FaceTime–even when used in countries that allow FaceTime.

To verify if your iPad’s model is one on this FaceTime restricted list, open Settings > General > About

If your iPad’s model number includes an AB, AE, or AH just before the slash, FaceTime cannot (at this time) be enabled. In that case, your iPad was designated for sale in those countries where FaceTime is banned.

      Hi Jordan,

Sorry to hear about your issues with FaceTime’s camera. Does your front facing camera work in other apps? If you aren’t seeing your image in that box, then it sounds like either your forward facing camera isn’t working normally OR the FaceTime app is having a problem recongizing the camera’s feed. So open your Camera App and see if both cameras function normally.

First, close all apps that can access the camera(s). Double press Home or swipe up the Home Gesture Bar. Find all apps including FaceTime that access your camera and swipe up on their app preview to close. Once all apps are closed, force restart your device.

On an iPhone X, iPhone 8, or iPhone 8 Plus: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Then, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.
On an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold both the Side and Volume Down buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
On an iPhone 6s and earlier, iPad, or iPod touch: Press and hold both the Home and the Top (or Side) buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

Then open FaceTime and see if your front-camera works.

If not, update your iOS to the latest version your device accepts. Make sure you backup first.

Now, if your front-facing camera isn’t working at all–on any app. Try these steps to see if your camera shutter is closed. If nothing works, it’s probably a harware problem that needs fixed.

However, if your front facing camera works with other apps but not FaceTime, try the following:

Reinstall your FT app. Go to Settings > General > iPhone (or iPad) Storage and scroll down the list of apps to locate FaceTime. Tap that and press Offload App. Confirm to Offload. Then restart.

Once restarted, return to that same menu and select Reinstall App. After FT reinstalls, restart again. Then try using FT.

If nothing helps, it’s defintely time to take your device for inspection at an Apple Store or Service Repair Center. Ask them to run diagnostics and make sure you explain your issue as well as everything you’ve tried.

      Keep us posted,

      Hi Ash,

Wow, sorry to hear that you and your wife are having problems with FaceTime. Let’s reactivate it by going to Settings > FaceTime and toggling off. Once off, wait 20-30 seconds and toggle it back on. When activation is complete, check all your information under You can be reached by facetime at and make sure it includes your email and your phone number (if using an iPhone.) Also, confirm that the Apple ID listed is correct–if not, tap it and update the information.

Next, let’s reset your network settings. Go to Setttings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This process removes any stored WiFi passwords so have those available to re-enter before performing this reset.

Once completed, restart your device by powering off, waiting 10-20 seconds, and powering back up.

After the restart, choose a WiFi network (the fastest and most stable available) and then open your Contacts App and locate your wife’s information card. Check that FaceTime is highlighted in the icon section below her name. If so, tap the FaceTime icon and see if you can now make a FT call to her.

If successful, disconnect that call and ask her to call you via FaceTime–see if that works.

Let us know if you are still having issues,

      Hi Vivian,

Sorry you’re having troubles with FaceTime. If you havent’t check your Mac’s Date&Time, do that:

Verify that the Date, Time, and Time Zone are set correctly:
Go to System Preferences > Date & Time > Date & Time
Turn On “Set Automatically” (if it’s already on, turn off, wait 20 seconds, and turn back on)
Click the Time Zone tab and confirm

If that doesn’t do the trick, try changing your DNS Settings:

Update your Mac’s DNS settings to Google’s open DNS. Here is how: Click System Preferences > Network > Select Network (Wi-Fi) > Advanced > the DNS tab > click the + button to add Google DNS, enter 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. Click OK then Apply.

Hope one of these works for you! Let us know.

My wife cannot receive Facetime calls but can place them. Her profile on my phone does not show the Facetime icon highlighted, it shows a grayed out “video” symbol where the Facetime icon normally appears on a profile. When she calls me, the Facetime icon appears on my contact info on her phone.
I have checked and re-checked all the settings, restarted her phone, deleted and re-installed Facetime, but nothing changes. It seems to be a setting on her phone but I cannot find it. SHe is signed in to her AppleID, the Facetime and Camera options are on under restrictions.
Since she can place Facetime calls, it seems like it must be a setting in her phone or her AppleID profile that is preventing everyone else from seeing her Facetime capability in their profiles of her.

      Rudy,

Sorry, you’re having trouble with your FaceTime calls. First, let’s close the FT app by double pressing home (or swiping up the Home Gesture Bar), locate the FaceTime App Preview, and swipe up to close it. Once the app is closed, force a restart by:

On an iPhone 6S or below plus all iPads & iPod Touches, press Home and Power at the same time until you see the Apple logo
For iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold both the Side and Volume Down buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo
On an iPhone X or iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Then press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Finally, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo

Once you’ve completed the restart, try FaceTime again.

If that doesn’t help, visit FT’s Settings (Settings > FaceTime) and check that you do not have anyone on your Blocked list–if you do delete these (you can add them again later.) Then look through all your FT settings, make sure your Apple ID, and the phone numbers and email addresses listed under can be reached at and caller id are accurate and have a checkmark next to them–caller id allows just one checkmark.

After unblocking anyone and verifying settings, try FT again. If it still isn’t working as expected, let’s reactivate FT by toggling FaceTime Off, waiting 30 seconds, and toggling back on (go to Settings > FaceTime.)

If none of these options help, let’s reset your settings. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. This action does not erase any data but does return things like wallpaper, accessibility settings, WiFi passcodes, and any personalized settings back to defaults. It also helps clear any settings that maybe obstructing apps.

Hopefully, one of these tips works for you. If not, let us know.

Then restart your device and open FT again. See if the problem persists.

Also, make sure you don’t have your screen orientation locked. Swipe in control center and check that the screen orientation icon is not highlighted. If it is, tap it to toggle off.

Finally, try to calibrate your compass. Check that this setting: Settings>Privacy>>Location Services>>System Services>>Compass Calibration and toggle it on and off a couple of times. Then toggle your location services on/off a couple of times (Settings > Privacy > Location Services)

      Hi Donna,

Oh that’s frustrating! Normally, I would think it was a problem on the other user’s end–but since this is happening to everyone, that’s highly unlikely.

Have you tried completely signing out of FaceTime, closing the app, and then relaunching FT and signing back in?

Also check your FaceTime preferences and make sure all the fields are filled out with the correct information.

Removing all recents may also help–it’s an option under the FaceTime menu.

If none of these does anything, you could delete the FaceTime App and then reinstall. But it is a pain! That’s because FaceTime is an app that came with macOS, so to get it back you have to reinstall all of macOS. It might help but it’s an extreme fix. If you decide to go this route, please backup before proceeding with a reinstall.

That’s all I got. I’ll keep thinking and looking into it.

      Hi Lynn,

That’s not good. Have you tried deleting the FaceTime App and then reinstalling it via the App store? If you are running any version of iOS 10, you now can delete many native Apple apps, including FaceTime.

      Cheers,

      SK

      Jean,

Chances are they have their camera off or have placed a restriction on FaceTime using their camera. In many cases, the problem is not on your end, especially if they see you.

It may have something to do with the camera being used for another app while FaceTiming. Both of you should try restarting it and make sure none of the camera apps are open

      Cheers,

      Liz

      Hi Rama,

Are you both you and your caller connected to WiFi? If so, check if you have sufficient bandwidth and try pinging to see what numbers you get (low ping numbers required for FaceTime to work properly)

There’s an article for iOS 10 specifically–take a look at the tips offered there. FaceTime and iOS10

Wishing you the best of luck,

      Liz

The receiving person’s device does not ring ( gets a missed call message).
When that person calls, my device rings and FaceTime works. Can someone help me.

edit your friend’s contact and change the listed phone number from “mobile” to “work:” FaceTime always tries calling the number marked as “mobile” or ‘iPhone” first and only if it doesn’t find one it tries an email address. So give this a try and see if FaceTime uses the email address and you successfully establish a call. Also make sure your friends’s settings are NOT set to ‘silent’ or ‘do not disturb’

      Cheers,

      Liz

Face time on my iPad 2 consistently displays a 5 in a red circle. I have hard reset and it comes back. It implies five missed calls. When none have been made or missed.

How do I get rid of the 5 permanently?

I have a unique problem!!! Please help!!!!! Someone sent me the effective power iMessage hack which made it impossible to open the iMessage app, and I was able to get back onto the iMessage app after a long time of trying various fixing techniques, but since then I think, my iMessage and FaceTime are disabled by itself, and I settings it won’t let me activate them, the sliding circle doesn’t move and I can’t open the FaceTime settings at all. The FaceTime app is on the home screen but when I open it it says it is disabled and kicks me out. Also, I can’t access the info for my iCloud account in settings either, it’s faded out like FaceTime. PLEASE IF ANYONE KNOWS HOW TO HELP ME I DESPERATELY NEED HELP TO FIX THIS!!!

Problem with FaceTime for the last month. iPad is on ios 8.3, problem started before the upgrade. Went through all the troubleshooting steps several times. Apple ID is good, FaceTime works on m MacBook and iPhone 5S using the same account. Apple Id is entered for both iMessages and FaceTime. I open FaceTime and click on Next, get a message to check email, never get the email. Tried a dozen times. Went to Apple Id on the web, logged in, get an error the Apple ID is already in use on another account. How do I find out which accoutn?

I am able to connect to others using my iPhone 4 but NOT my MacBook Pro. I cannot even talk to myself using my phone to my computer. My computer is running the most up to date (without paying) Face time 1.0.3. I have tried to purchase the 1.0.5 and it tells me face time is already installed on this computer and to see if there are any software updates…which there aren’t. How can I change the phone number or email that my computer uses? There is no tab to “update profile”. Please help, I would really like face time to work on my computer.

    Thank you

Same freakin problem here. Don’t know what to do. Powered off then turned back on. Checked to see if facetime is on, which it is. Calls to the other person, connects then disconnects. Other people calls in to facetime and it disconnects right away as well. What’s going on? There’s so many people having this issue yet there’s nothing that Apple can resolve it? Are they trying to make us buy a new phone? Well, if anyone has any ideas of troubleshooting this, please let us know. Thanks!!

I had the same issue, Facetime, photobooth and camera all disappeared from my ipad 2. Even apps that needed to use the camera, such as WordLens, started not working.

It turned out to be because I had setup an exchange mail account on my ipad so I could check work emails while I was on Holiday. As soon as I removed the mail account, everything came back!

Not sure what the root cause is, but I’ve verified this now I’m back at work by getting a colleague to do the same thing, and their facetime etc also disappeared, and came back when they removed the mail account. However, Iphone 4 users dont have the issue. Very odd…
