With such a vast number of products on sale, it’s no wonder some of them have issues. This post details how you can Report a Problem to Apple to get the iTunes or App Store support you need.
There are millions of apps available on Apple’s App Store and over tens of millions of songs, TV shows, and films on the iTunes Store. With such a staggering number of products, it’s only reasonable to expect some of them to have problems.
But what are you supposed to do if your newest app has a bug? Or what if the film you just purchased isn’t working correctly?
Apple’s Report a Problem service is available for just that.
Quick tips
Follow these quick tips to report any unauthorized purchases to Apple
- Open the email purchase confirmation (look for a receipt from Apple) and choose the link to reportaproblem next to the disputed purchase name
- Use a browser and visit Apple’s reportaproblem website directly. Tap on the category (apps, music, TV, books, etc.) and locate the item in question and choose the report a problem button next to the purchase along with your reason for the dispute
- Open the App Store, iTunes, or the Music app and view your purchase history under your account settings to locate the disputed item. Once located, tap report a problem and choose refund plus your reason for the refund
- Review your subscriptions in your Apple ID settings or on the App Store account page and make any changes or cancellations as needed

Report a Problem
Reporting a problem to Apple informs them about any issues you’re having with App Store or iTunes purchases made in the last 90 days.
Apple offers the following problem topics to choose from:
- Unauthorized purchases: products that you were billed for but didn’t buy yourself
- Missing purchases: products you purchased but cannot download or find in your library
- Unusable purchases: products that fail to download, install, open, or work
- Misrepresented purchases: products that don’t live up to their descriptions
Once you’ve reported a problem, Apple will get back to you with the support you need.
That might mean technical and troubleshooting assistance to smooth out software errors.
Or in other circumstances, it could mean iTunes and App Store refunds for unauthorized or accidental purchases.
How Do I Report a Problem to Apple?
There are three ways to report a problem to Apple: from the invoice, from the website, or from iTunes.
We’ll explain each of these three options below, starting with the invoice.
#1 Report a Problem from the emailed invoice
After every iTunes or App Store purchase, you’ll get an invoice sent to your Apple ID email address.
This invoice usually arrives a couple of days later and includes details about your purchase. Look for an email with the subject line your receipt from Apple.
These invoices also feature a link to Write a Review or to Report a Problem with your purchase.
This link is the quickest route to report a problem; unless you never received or cannot find the invoice.
The Report a Problem link takes you Apple’s website. From here, you can select a category and describe the issue to Apple before hitting Submit.

#2 Report a Problem from the Website
Visit reportaproblem.apple.com to report a problem on any of your recent purchases.
After signing in to the relevant Apple ID, this website will list every iTunes or App Store purchase made on that account in the last 90 days.
Clicking the Report a Problem button next to each item allows you to describe that issue to Apple.
You’ll also need to choose a relevant category before submitting the problem.

#3 Report a Problem from iTunes
Use iTunes on a Mac or PC to view all your purchases and report a problem to Apple.
From the iTunes, menu-bar click Account and then View My Account. Enter your Apple ID password you’ll see a range of information about your account.
Under the Purchase History heading, click See All to view purchases made from your Apple ID.
By default, iTunes only shows purchases made from the last 90 days. Next to each of them is the option for More.
Clicking this uncovers the purchase date, device, seller, and presents a link to Report a Problem.
Just like the invoice, clicking Report a Problem loads the relevant page on Apple’s website, allowing you to choose a category and describe the problem there.

What Do I Do When My Purchase is Older than 90 Days?
Apple’s support lasts a generous 90 days, but many of us have iTunes and App Store purchases going back further than that.
Unfortunately, there’s no guarantee of support with these older purchases. But there are still a few things you can try.
Contact the App Developer Directly
A good App Developer will want to know about problems with their apps. While some developers may no longer be active, you might still be able to reach out to them for help.
Developers could offer you a quick solution or may promise a bug fix in the next update.
On its website, Apple explains how to get App Support from developers using any Apple device.
Manage Automatic Subscription and Billing Issues for Apps
According to a recent study, the average Apple user spends about $79 in subscriptions and apps.
There are often instances when a user is getting charged for subscriptions that he/she doesn’t use.
The easiest way to look for these subscriptions and charges is to start via your Apple ID setting or the Apple App store app.
- Via Apple ID: go to Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions. Tap each subscription to get its details and change or cancel
- Via the App Store: open the App Store app and choose the Today tab from the bottom. Then, tap your profile picture or icon and choose Subscriptions or Manage Subscriptions. Tap each subscription to get its details and change or cancel
This provides you with the details around your subscriptions, and you can choose to renew or delete these subscriptions directly.

How Do I Get a Refund from Apple for App or Movie Purchase?
There are times when you buy apps which are added to your ‘Purchased History’ under your Apple ID.
Any movie purchases will also show up here.
Sometimes users find that there are in-app charges that they didn’t sign up for and want to cancel and get a refund for their purchase.
If you are trying to understand these charges and applying for a refund, here are some helpful steps.
Before you start with the steps below, take a moment to inspect the Apple ID. Do you use multiple Apple IDs?
You may have to check this process for the various IDs that you use on your device to narrow down the issue.
- Start with your bank/credit card statement. Do you see any charges starting with ‘itunes.com/bill.’
- If you do not recognize the amounts, there is a possibility that multiple charges might have been lumped into one line item.
- The best thing to do is to start by examining your ‘Purchased History’ so that you can find out the app in question.
- Open up App Store app on your iPhone or iPad and then tap on your profile at the top right corner of the screen
- Next, Tap on Purchased and choose ‘My Purchases.’ This provides you the list of all the apps that you have downloaded for the given Apple Id.
- These show you the apps on your iPhone as well as Apps that you may have purchased using other Apple devices using your Apple ID
- If you have a Family Plan, you should look under ‘Family Purchases’ to see the details of the apps.
- Once you have identified the app in question for which you want to claim a refund, the next step is to figure out how to contact the app developer (Third-party app)
- If it is an Apple app or iTunes movie, use the report a problem feature to get in touch with Apple as explained in the previous sections. If it is a third party app, then check the steps below.
- From the App store on your device, search for the app and tap on it.
- Swipe up to find the Ratings & Reviews section, then tap App Support.
- This should take you to the app’s support page so that you can contact the third-party developer and request a refund, if eligible.
Refund for Third-Party Subscription Problem
If you are trying to get a refund for a subscription charge as opposed to an app purchase or in-app purchase, you will have to start by examining all the subscriptions that are under your Apple Id.
Apple doesn’t handle these third party subscriptions.
As per Apple, if you purchased subscriptions from a third-party service
You might have bought some subscriptions through another company, including:
- Content or services obtained through a website (streaming video and music services, dating apps, etc.).
- Content or services purchased through an app on another company’s platform (like signing up for Netflix through the Google Play store).
You will have to reach out to these companies directly to cancel the subscription and seek eligible refunds.
How Can I Prevent Unauthorized Charges Moving Forward?
The best value is to start by restricting in-app purchases. Many users find that a family member purchased in-app elements without their knowledge.
You can now easily restrict such in-app purchases by using the ScreenTime app on your Apple device.
- If you’re using iOS 12+ or iPadOS, use Screen Time
- Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions
- Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions to turn it on
- Then tap iTunes & App Store Purchases > In-App Purchases > Don’t Allow
If you’re using iOS 11 or earlier, use Restrictions (Settings > General > Restrictions > In-App Purchases)

Contact Apple Support Directly
If you can’t reach the App Developer or if Apple is the App Developer, you may want to contact Apple Support directly.
They may not be able to offer specific assistance for third-party apps. However, they should still be able to provide you with basic troubleshooting steps that might fix any errors.
Here’s a guide we prepared earlier that explains precisely how to get in touch with Apple support.
Seeking customer service can be frustrating and tiresome at the best of times. Next time you need to Report a Problem to Apple, we hope this guide makes it a lot more pain-free.
Reader tips
- What usually works for me is to either call 1–800-MY-APPLE and ask to speak with an iTunes specialist or visit Apple’s Report a Problem website. Either way, make sure you have the details (like charged amount, date charged, and so forth) for the specific transaction that you wish to dispute. Apple cannot reverse a transaction if it has not yet completed (i.e. pending charges.) Your payment method must show that it is charged in order for Apple to reverse it or issue a refund.

Apple as a company lacks empathy. Do you know what it took for them to look into my issue?
About 15 five-paragraph emails, speaking to two separate people on the phone, threatening to cancel my Apple Music account, and threatening to never use an Apple product again.
And I had to suggest that they manually look into credit.
Probably a total of 10 hours of work on my part just for them to possibly look into refunding an unauthorized purchase on my account and they will call me back in 48 hours.
I am grateful that finally, someone is looking into it. But why do you have to pull teeth?
Why do you have to be an expert at communication and technical issues just be able to get any help with Apple?
If there was a little grandmother that didn’t know about computers or customer support, she would never forget a refund.
You have to be firm, direct and have all of the information at your disposal when you speak to them or you’re not going to get helped.
Apple was a very strange company and their downfall is going to be a corporate structure who doesn’t help people do to their greed – I will add that this is coming from someone who has used iTunes for over 12 years, has had his own tech support company, has been a manager at call centers and knows about customer service and tech support.
I will say that they are calm and collected but when it comes to actually having the authorization and ” ownership” to help their customers? Very Poor.
Until things change in the corporate structure, my personal advice, in my opinion, would be to avoid Apple products until they get this customer service thing under control. Thank God for freedom of speech
ChaCha says
Hello Chris:
Same issue here. The support help line, gives out the incorrect information on replacements and billing issues. They do not take responsibility for the mistakes made on their behalf. If the calls are “monitored and recorded”, as indicated, they would listen to the false information given to it’s customers. I asked them to pull the phone records, but of course, they could not.
Do you have any suggestions with how I can submit my review on any other sites that will help expose their continuous exploitation?
Thank you for listening 😉
ChaCha

How do I report a fraudulent Apple Bill charge in the amount of $198.94 on my credit card dated 12/28/2019.
I was away from the USA during that time of the false transaction
SK says
Hi Dallas,
Go to Apple’s reporting site and sign in with your other Apple ID. In that list of recent purchases that you made with that Apple ID, tap on that transaction and report the problem there.
Alternatively, you can visit this Apple Support Site and choose request a refund or select other options like Talk, Email, or Chat with Apple regarding this billing issue.

I have two charges that came out of my bank acct for apple.com that I did not authorize. One on 11/4 and again on 12/2. I do not have an iPhone. I checked with family members and they claim they didn’t purchase any products either. What information do you need from me to stop these $10.59 charges and to refund my money?

Cheryl,
If the tips in the article and video did not help you, it’s best to contact Apple Support in your home country or region.

My wife has received notice of orders for Games on App that appear to be fraudulent. Who do we contact at Apple Support?
Elizabeth Jones says
Hi Walter,
Boy, are we glad you caught that before acting!
Here’s how to report these issues directly to Apple
If you receive a phishing email that looks like it’s from Apple, please send it to [email protected]. Make sure you mention that in the email’s header/subject line
If you receive a suspicious email in your iCloud.com, me.com, or mac.com inbox, forward them to [email protected]. Make sure you mention that in the email’s header/subject line
Please be aware that although the above-mentioned email addresses are monitored by Apple, it’s quite possible that you do not receive a reply to your report.
To report spam and any other suspicious messages received through iMessage, tap Report Junk under the message.

I want to play ROBLOX but it needs an update and I can’t use the App Store even though I signed out of my Apple ID and signed back in.
SK says
Hi Connor,
Close all your open apps by double pressing the Home button or swiping up the Home Gesture Bar, then swipe up off the top of your screen all the app previews. Do this until no app previews remain and all you see is your Home Screen.
Once all apps are closed, restart your iPhone.
Then try signing back into the iTunes Store and search for Roblox. Download and install.

I seem to be experiencing a buffering/lock problem with my iPhone 5s. Primarily while replying on Facebook, upon posting a comment or reply, my phone goes into buffer mode and is useless inside that app until it either times out or I reboot the phone. Any thoughts on why this has suddenly started. The phone is very sedentary as it barely gets moved from a padded mount and it not using battery power as it is plugged into power. Please advise… Thanks guys! Kevin Ritchey.

iOS 8.1 Safari, google map past not working.
I am using an iPad iOS 8.1 Safari.
I have the iPad User Guide in favorites so it shows up just above the page Tabs.
I have 21 tabs open.
I click the + to open a 22nd Tab.
I go to google maps.
in the search field I try to double tap to get the paste command ballon.
It pops up but then goes away before I can tap it
I think it is doing this because the left tabs are all bunched up.
If I slide the 22th tab to the first position the problem goes away
and I can double tap in the google map search field and select the paste command
ballon.
I think the new safary tab needs to be fixed so if there are a bunch of tabs and someone double clicks on a search field the is at the top of the screen it will make the paste command ballon stay visible so a user can select it.
Another solution would be to add some extra keys to the keyboard.
left, right, up, down, cut, paste, pgup, pgdn, home, end, select, del, wordLeft, wordRight. Then it would be
easier to type and edit. I think this would be more useful than the smiley face keys 🙁

I purchased an 8GB Ipod touch for my son in July. It has never been able to run any of the downloaded apps, only the factory install apps will run. I did a factory reset, but that did not fix the problem. Apps have been uninstalled, tried to install a new app but it still will not work. Apps will download just fine, but when you try to open them it gets stuck at the main screen & the loading circle just spins forever. The apps never open. I missed the 30 day window to return this ipod to the store & now it appears that we are stuck with it. Would love to figure out how to get this thing to work.
