iTunes 9.1: iPhone/iPod Will Not Show Up or Sync

By SK 6 comments Last updated November 17, 2011

Several users have reported an issue in which iPhones and/or iPods will not appear in iTunes after the update to iTunes 9.1.

Solution

In most cases, this issue can be resolved by deleting the following file

  • <username>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.itunes.plist

then restarting.

Failing this, you may want to peruse the fixes available in this Apple Knowledge Base article.

I had a question. My IPod will not shuffle songs anymore; it plays the same song, unless I touch the forward arrow. Is there a simple fix?

      Hi Bob,

Make sure your iPod isn’t stuck in repeat–which is what it sounds like. The repeat icon looks like a circle or oval made up of two arrows that indicate the song is looping–basically stuck in an endless circle.

now if that’s not the case…

Not sure what model you have, try a hard reset by holding down the Sleep/Wake/Power button and the Volume Down button until you see the Apple logo appear on-screen, then release.

If your model doesn’t include those buttons, take a look at how to reset, hard reset, or force restart your iPod model–these are all terms for the same thing!

Just like when you install the iPhone SDK, or prior updates to iTunes, you often need to restart the computer before the iPhone will appear. This is not a new issue.

My ipod touch did not initially show up, and then froze in use a little later. Rebooting the ipod took much longer at the Apple logo than usual, to the point I was thinking I would have to let the ipod run out of power and try again after a recharge. It still failed to show up on either my MacBook or my iMac. As others have reported, a reboot of the Macs seems to have solved the problem.

Powercycling the phone and the computer seemed to do the trick for me as well.
